Egg fell out off nest chick stuck to shell

Hi everyone,

I have never done something like this before. Please be patient with me because I am panicking. Baby chick is stuck to shell. It fell out of the nest and I made the mistake of taking off most of the shell. It has been stuck to the shell for the whole day and I have a feeling it is getting weaker. I don't know what to do to save it. Please help.

I tried first to give it back to the hen before taking off the shell but she pecked at it and it started to bleed, then I panicked and opened the shell.

I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think this chick will make it. The umbilical cord is still attatched to the shell, so the chick won't make it :/ let me know if it makes it through the night!!

Hens are able to "see" IR light. They use this ability to judge the health of their brood. It is common for hens to "euthanize" weak biddies.

I think you should put him in a brooder.
The heat will heat him up.
It might dry the umbilical cord and it would break off.

Thank you for your answers everyone. It survived. Just need to get it to eat now. It was a feral chicken and
this is a feral chick. We live on Oahu there are a lot of ferals. I did not have a brooder but I had a heat lamp to put it under. It worked thank you ChickenGrass. Is it possible that the mom will take it now?

Wait until the night time.
Then go over to the mom and slip the chick under her.
If she has other chicks she will just think that it hatched.
I had 2 chicks who were 1 week old and their mom died
So I waited for the night time and i slipped them under another broody hen
And she adopted them.
