Egg hiding EE hens and Dottie the Golden Retriever

I will be sure to let Dottie know that you all are impressed with her new trick! ;)
My son and husband didn't believe me until they got to see her in action. My husband pointed out that they have "soft mouths" and are bred to "retrieve" unharmed the birds that hunters have shot... so I guess it's in her genes. That and she is such a sweet girl - always looking for ways to please us and get praise (and maybe a peanut butter treat too).
Bloom Chicks, you are gonna love your golden puppy! Congrats!!!
Here is a pic of Dottie, she LOVES "her" porch :)

We just brought her home yesterday! She is so sweet. We were suppose to only pick her out yesterday but the breeder decided to let us take her home yesterday. Her name is Rosebud and today she saw the chickens for the 1st time and wanted to introduce herself but they weren't having any of that.

It was kind of funny because my chickens are bigger then she is. Here is a picture of her.

Well Rosebud is absolutely adorable!!! I bet she will be a wonderful chicken protector :) like our Dottie.

My grandmother told a story that happened when she was a girl. One day when it began to rain their dog became worried about a clutch of newly hatched chicks. The dog ran around in the tall grass till she found a chick, then put her mouth down over the chick to hold it in place and protect it from the rain until a person came and rescued the chick. As soon as one chick was rescued the dog went to find another until all the chicks were found and placed in the barn with the mother. All the chicks survived unharmed despite spending some time inside a dog's mouth!

I always loved that story about the dog finding and protecting the chicks but now that I have chickens of my own I have to wonder about the bad mother hen that couldn't call her chicks into safety by herself! Interesting how that story takes on a new dimension now that I have new life experiences.

That is a great story. It's funny how attached we get to our chickens... and it's really nice when our other pets watch out for them.
