Soooo... I have these four super crafty Easter Egger hens that feel it is there duty to play hide and seek with their eggs. Everyday they fly out of their spacious yards to explore our property and find a new fun places to lay there eggs.
Well, just recently our Golden Retriever started collecting these eggs. She surprised me one afternoon about a week ago by showing me where the nest was hidden in the bushes. But then she did something that really amazed me... she picked the egg up in her mouth, walked it over to me and placed it gently by my feet. I rewarded her with praise (and a treat). Now she is bringing the eggs up onto the porch for us (more praise and treats). I am soooo jazzed that she is doing this. She's always been a pretty great dog... loves the chickens and protects them... but gathering eggs... that was unexpected!
Has anyone else ever had a dog do this? :)

How cool! Definitely a retriever worth her weight in GOLD! My dog likes to bring us garbage. I suspect if she finds an egg, she'll eat it. Of course, I don't know if she's been doing that already... [IMG]

I'd say that dog has earned a cheese omelet!

I will be sure to let Dottie know that you all are impressed with her new trick! ;)
My son and husband didn't believe me until they got to see her in action. My husband pointed out that they have "soft mouths" and are bred to "retrieve" unharmed the birds that hunters have shot... so I guess it's in her genes. That and she is such a sweet girl - always looking for ways to please us and get praise (and maybe a peanut butter treat too).
Bloom Chicks, you are gonna love your golden puppy! Congrats!!!
[IMG] Here is a pic of Dottie, she LOVES "her" porch :)

Now you need to wash the eggs whether you had planned to or not. I don't think I would want dog spit to dry on my eggs. Even my own dog. [IMG] Our last dog was a Golder Retriever. Really gentle dogs that I could tell.
