Egg in leg????

That sure sounds strange.

Its probably a tumor and its probably very fast growing, so I don't know if that indicates a long life for the chicken.
if you're up for it, see what it is; in the best case sceneario its just a benign growth and youve gotten it off....it may be vascularized but its unlikely that it would be a main artery or some such.
You can tie it off from the outside tightly around the tumor with waxed dental floss in a slipknot, if you can get around it, then incise the skin to see what it is. if it starts bleeding
pull the floss tighter.
you can use styptic powder or baby powder for bleeding, but if its tied off it shouldn't bleed out.
Any vascularization of the tumor is not the main feed to the foot, its an offshoot...so while you want to be sure that it doesn't empty all the blood from the body
its not gonna be like cutting the jugular or something.
Ive done alot of bumblefoot surgery over the sink and while there is much more bleeding than I ever envisioned, it stopped, clotted and healed up very well.
Ive seen descriptions and pics of stomach and crop surgeries here where its the same....there is some blood, and its good to have lots of paper towels or a sink to let it pour into
but its unlikely that it wont stop bleeding.
I hope you put up pics of the thing...its educational for those of us who like the medical aspect of life;-)

Okay, I heard back from dlhunicorn (for those who don't know her, she's a medical chicken guru - at least IMO!!). Her reply:

I wasnt familiar with that brand name so googled it and it appears to be benzocaine.... so no, it is not suitable (particularly in case where you are going to cut the skin giving it more access to the blood stream) see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzocaine.

Always remember that any medicine with "....caine" in it is toxic to chickens.

BEST of luck with your girl!!

max
strength is 20 percent benzocaine... normal strength is ten.

feel the skin and examine her good to see if there are other lumps (even small ones) as my first thought was gout (very hard white crstalized substance is what you would find then). ... that is awful big though ...

Here's another question regarding tying it off...

Would it be horribly cruel to tie it or even rubber band it and let it fall off on it's own? Didn't people used to do that with stuff?? It sounds awful to me, but I thought I'd ask.

I promise to get some pictures posted before I go to bed tonight.

And if "caines" are out of the question, what _should_ be used if there is cutting involved???

ohhh somewhere I should have photos showing major arteries (if there are none in that area and you are comfortable with excising it I would say go with that... ) do you have something to cauterize with if necessary?
Avian Medicine (the entire book) > Ritchie < is available online... Id have a good nite studying that if I were you first.

... I have no advice and as I understand how avian experience pain, I think the risk from that is less than from analgesic.... Often their brain is unable to handle stress from pain and it "switches off" (thus during the stress event it will not feel pain... this is why many report the bird not appearing in pain as they do the bumblefoot surgery yet afterwards while recovering do)... I will see if i can find that article for you real quick... certain things (like beak etc) will but let me get that article and you can read for yourself....

Nothing comes to mind, but make a few suggestions and I might have them without thinking of them.

I could possibly snag some silver nitrate sticks from my vet. I do have styptic powder, but I know if there is a big bleeder, that won't work.

I wish my sister was here. She's a RVT in NM. She's never done surgery on a chicken before, but she used to work for a vet that would let her neuter cats.
