Egg Issue

I have gotten some of those paper shelled eggs from my Comets. They are always out of the nesting box, so I assume it feels more like a poo to the chicken(?) Anyway, the first time it happened, the vet told me to put out oyster shell. Something my original chicken information source didn't tell me about (feed store where I got the pullets). So we did, and the chickens do go for it pretty good. But we still, very occasionally, get one of these eggs. I woulds love to hear an explanation of what and why.

Oh, and as for your oyster shell size.... have you dug to the bottom of the bag? We get the big pieces on the top and the finer pieces drift to the bottom. But my chickens like the bigger chunks. They quit eating it when they get to the bottom stuff and I have to get them more. We keep a heavy dog bowl full of it.

Thanks Barn Maid Ann! Its great to hear that someone else has seen this. The poo thing makes sense. I'll get some of that oyster shell out first thing in the morning. I've just been throwing out a handful at a time in the yard.

A paper shell egg is usually laid by pullets when they first start laying.
If you have a hen that lays a paper shell it means it has moved thru her reproductive system to fast for the shell to form.
I wouldn't worry unless it continues for a long period of time it could just be a glitch in her reproductive system.
Uping the calcium will not solve this as it's internal and has little to do with how much calcium she gets.

I break up a broody by isolateing her in a cage by herself with no nest after a few days of no nest she should come around.

Most of the oyster shell in the bags I buy is dime and nickel size pieces. Unless you have really tiny hens they should be fine with that. If my girls encounter a piece larger than they want to swallow whole, they just beat it against the ground to break it up.
I paid $3 a piece for my nesting boxes. They're white plastic organizing bins from wally world. Easy to clean and holding up well.

You think that's funny oegblady?!? I read somewhere that ice cubes in the nesting box would cool their little tummies and break their broodiness. So instead of having an ice cube out there melting and making a mess, I thought to myself, "how about an ice pack?" I just put it out there about 20 minutes ago. She went straight back to the nesting box and is currently sitting on a ice pack! SHEESH! I won't leave it in there overnight for fear of her killing herself with cold. Although its a very temperate night tonight... Can you say, "DETERMINED!?!"

Sounds like she is determined. i would put her in a cage for a few days.

I also feed my girls there own egg shells. I put the shells in oven with piolt lite on for a couple hours to dry up the shell. then I crush them and sprinkle in there run.

Sorry about the other place they need to get a grip with all that silly missin threads. What if somebody had a life or death problem and they missed it

As i said above the paper shell could just be a glitch in her reproductive system.
I would give it a while and see if it will correct it's self.
It happens because the egg passes to fast thru her system and it doesn't have time to form a shell.

In my opinion I think you should add one more nest box so the broody can't hog the nesting box. I bet that is exactly what happened because my sex link is broody and even though I have SIX nest boxes they all seem to love the one that the heat lamp is shining at

GO FIGURE! And when I walked in there today there were THREE hens in one box and two had their bums sticking out and they did lay right there and they both fell on the floor. I watched them as they laid them. Silly hens! And also, one of mine sometimes lays those soft shelled eggs right after a large double yolker and when I offer oyster shell she stops and lays regular eggs again. I would try that for sure. Good luck!
