I'm a new chicken mom, our chickens adopted us and I know nothing!

Other than what I've learned at byc so far. Can you "train" chickens, I want mine to learn piano?

OK, I'll be serious now, I was getting 2 eggs a day from 2 hens, we have or had 6 all together until just the last few days. 2 hens have gone awol,

so I was down to 1 egg a day, and now the last 2 days we havn't gotten any! We went on a hen hunt looked everywhere we could think of without trespassing into our neighbors yards. Can't find the girls or any eggs laid in weird places. I rather envy those of you who have personal relationships with your birds, ours just showed up one day last fall and have stayed ever since. We didn't raise them. We are feeding and watering them, but they only let us get so close. We still don't have a proper shelter for them much to my chagrin! I sure have enjoyed having them around and I really like the little oval gifts they've been leaving for us. Does anyone have any advice on how to "domesticate", and/or get up close and personal with chickens that have adopted me. Also I'm kind of freaking out about mites, lice, vitamin supplements, worming, etc, etc. I was reading up on chicken care and am now feeling a bit daunted! Thanx all!

It really depends on the breed of bird. I have a few that won't come to me for anything. Others, that it doesn't take much to convince them to come closer. Black oil sunflower seeds, they try to bombard our back door for the cat food. If you find the spot that they dust themselves you can add your lice/mites stuff to the dirt, that way you don't have to try and handle them.

Those other 2 may be sitting on nest somewhere, or could have gotten eaten. Hope you find them.

Good luck and

Thank You Tazcat! I will definitely get some sunflower seeds. Today I got 2 eggs, yesterday 1, and day before yesterday I got 1. One of our hens, I "think" they are Marans, but really I don't know for sure, has a blackish color on part of her comb, could this mean she's an older hen or maybe she's been sick?

I have a really great husband, 1 cute little jack russell mixed doggiegirl, and one super precious 5 yr old grandson.
