Egg laying

My Ancona hen hasn’t laid an egg in 4 days. She usually lays everyday. Last week all her eggs were soft
And pretty much broke after coming out. I have tried to give her extra protein and calcium but she wants left alone and pretty much stays on the roost all day or in the nest box. When I try to get her she completely freaks out to the point she is running into the walls. Any suggestions? She seems stressed by the other birds as well.

If you can catch her, try to feel if her abdomen feels hard or enlarged. Maybe somebody else has an idea?

Need more info about:
-your flock size(numbers, ages, genders),
-your coop(size in feet by feet with pics),
-and what and how exactly you are feeding,
these might offer clues to if there is a solvable problem.


When I have a bird that is acting 'off' I isolate bird in a wire cage within the coop for a day or two....so I can closely monitor their intake of food and water, crop function(checking at night and in morning before providing more feed), and their poops. Feel their abdomen, from below vent to between legs, for squishy or hard swelling. Check for external parasites or any other abnormalities.

Best to put crate right in coop or run so bird is still 'with' the flock.
I like to use a fold-able wire dog crate (24"L x 18"W x 21"H) with smaller mesh(1x2) on bottom of crate under tray.
Then you can put tray underneath crate to better observe droppings without it being stepped in. If smaller mesh is carefully installed, tray can still be used inside crate.

I have found out why she is acting funny. I feel awful. Under her wings she has very bad puncture wounds. One has healed over and other one is open. My guess is because she is the favorite of the rooster and his spurs are long. We just trimmed down the roosters spurs for the first time. We have had all the birds for a year 13 hens and 1 rooster. They are a year old. What is a suggestion to help our hen out and heal?

she actually laid an egg today and has been more social out running around. The only way I knew about her puncture wounds was because she had lifted her wing up and started picking at it.

I will try to catch her. Its about an inch long. skin is cut open completely to the muscle. The muscle is not cut. You can see the meat.
