I got a timer today and have it set to where they’ll get exactly 14 hours of daylight. How long before I can expect them to start laying?Set the light on a timer, hens require 12 - 14 hrs of sunlight.

We got ours from tractor supply on June 25, and I believe they’re around 2 or 3 days old when you buy them. I’m excited to see my first egg! Does the fake egg help them to lay in the boxes?I have pullet hens I hatched in May, I got 17 eggs today. This is the welsummer's 1st egg.

Welsummers do take longer to lay. My brown leghorn was the first.
As far as having lights on them, I do, and we have full winter here, (foot of snow). I don't know how long it will take for them to lay, just putting a light on them, but if my light goes out even for a day I notice a difference.
Can I use her egg she just laid? It’s small so we probably won’t eat it but it was still so exciting!Put a golf ball or fake egg in the nest. They are goofy when they start, such as shape, sizes and places.
