Egg laying

How long does it take a chicken to lay an egg, from stepping in to the nest box to when the egg comes out?

It's kinda like you steppin' into the bathroom:yiipchick I was doing some spring cleaning of the coop, changing out the deep litter the other day and I had two that REALLY wante me to be outa there! so I hustled along, and fifteen minutes later I was done,. It was a dead run to the coop, and they were in and out in fifteen minutes. I seen others take an hour. Must be some sorta comfort sitting on it for them. Like some of us, reading the paper .

I would say that it varies quite a bit per hen. Some seem to lay an egg really quick, others take a while. I have seen careless sexlinks walking around with an egg sticking part way out.
