I have a hen that I purchased from our local farm supply on March 3, 2013, as baby chicks. On July 13 I found two eggs in the brooding box. I've been keeping track, and this single hen has layed two eggs per day since the 13th, with the exception of the 14th, when she laid only one egg. I am wondering if that seems young to begin laying eggs, and also if it's unusual to get two eggs per day from this hen. The other hen I have has not begun to lay yet. Same breed - the two hens look identical. I have a picture of one of them in my photo album.

Any and all replies would be appreciated as I am still learning.

Thanks,

Congrats on the eggs.
The chick was at least 19 weeks old when she laid her first egg. That is not only common but kinda usual for some hatchery chicks. So, no, it is not too young but to be expected from some chickens. I have had some lay as early as 16 weeks but 19 is more common.
Pullets do not consistently lay two eggs a day. That would be miraculous. I suspect BOTH of your pullets are laying not just one. When a hen gets messed up with her timing it is possible but not probable that she lays more than one egg in a 22 hr period.

Wish ya the best.

Our pullets hatched March 1st and two of themhave already started laying. One on July 15 the other on July 16. The Buff Orp is laying one typically tiny egg a day but they are getting larger. The SLW is laying a Medium (almost large) size egg every 2nd day. The GLW and the Maran are still slackers.

My leghorn laid her first egg on July 18 at 18 weeks and has laid one every day. They are tiny but just a bit bigger each day. Yesterday, my barred rock (same age) spent most of the day in the nest area. This morning I went out to let them into the yard and there on the ground was one little brown egg. It is exciting when they start.
