Egg laying.

Hahahha music I love it

Maybe a little Bach or Betovan? Mendelson? I know.........Barry White! LOL!!!!

I know waiting is difficult. However, you just have to let nature take it's course. Let go of the issue that your husband will find the first egg. Hopefully you will have plenty of opportunities to see it. If you are having surgery and there is nothing you can do, feeling frustrated won't help.

Maybe ask him to bring in the first egg to you. That would be special.

I don't think music will help. They will lay when they are ready. Just like being pregnant and waiting for the baby to come. Except for a cesarean or other medically induced scenarios, babies come when nature says the are ready.

Your girls will lay when nature says so. Relax and enjoy.

I know, I know. Your reply is sensible. But I don't FEEL sensible! LOL! The girls run back and forth in their run, then suddenly plop down like they've been shot or something. They may lay on their sides and look dead, except they look up to see if we're watching. Then they chase each other, running and flapping. They don't fight, they just play. They had a cabbage pinata, but that's gone. We planted a "garden" in the end of their run with hardware cloth over it so they can't scratch it all up but can only munch on the tips of things as they grow up through the mesh. They act like they're plotting something. They suddenly run under the coop, then in a few minutes they all come rushing out together clucking up a storm! It reminds me of football players in a huddle, then come running out. They have plenty of room, but they still fidget around in their coop at night getting up and down on and off their roost. I know because we put a camera in there, so we can watch "chicken TV". They sure are entertaining!

That was a good idea you had about hubby bringing the first egg to me if there is one. Then I can show it off to all the nurses! LOL!

Now I don't feel like I might be left out of things!

Wow...you are one busy woman.

Chickens do like to play if they have the room and places to jump on and hide under. Most people never get to see these antics. Us chicken folk do and we know what great companions chickens can be. Lucky us and lucky you.

Keep up the fun. It will never grow old.

Heal quickly....and enjoy your girls.

All best,

Geri

Thank you, Geri. I'm home, but I sure didn't expect to be this swollen and in this much pain! However, nobody laid an egg while I was gone. Yesterday Hubby said Buffy was trying to lay an egg! He said she had her butt in the air a lot and he could see that she was trying to push something out! She kept going under the coop to where she looked like she'd made a nest with straw. So I went outside and told her to go into the coop and into the nest box. SHE DID! But she soon came back out and there was no real egg in there, only the wooden ones. Well, maybe today will be the day! Hubby promised to hang another cabbage in the run. Maybe that excitement will get things moving along. I'm hopeful! LOL! Maybe I can even get him to tilt the camera more toward the nest boxes.

You're right! I'll bet a lot of farmers don't have the time or patience to really observe their feathered babies and all their antics. They're missing out!

Miss Buffy Fluffybutt laid the first egg!!!

Congratulations, MOM!

Wow, you are excited!. Well, I was too the first time one of my chickens laid her first egg for me. Congrats, congrats, congrats to you and Fluffy. May there be many more.

I've heard first eggs are always smaller but get larger over time. Unless, of course, this is the normal size for her. I don't care what size they are. Only that the egg is normal which indicates the chickens are healthy.

Be sure to have some oyster shell available in a separate dish. Don't mix it in with the food. They will eat it as they feel they need it. Important part of their diet. It supplements any other calcium they get from their regular diet. For laying hens, they need calcium, but they won't eat more than they feel they need so you don't have to worry they are getting too much. However, laying hens, during the heavy laying months, need a bit more calcium than when they are not laying.

You can usually find it in any store that sells chicken supplies.

Thank goodness we had just switched to layer pellets a week or two ago since we were out of the grower pellets and didn't want to buy another 50 lb bag of that. We're going to bake and crush up all egg shells and put them out there in a dish for them like the grit. Anyway, I suppose we'll find another egg some time tomorrow. I expected the first few eggs to be small and figure they'll probably get a little bigger gradually. What surprised me was how dark brown it was. I expect that from the marans when they start laying, but not from an orpington. It was a pleasant surprise, though. My camera didn't pick up on that because of the flash. This egg is spotless and smooth all over with a hard shell. It was still warm when Hubby brought it in and handed it to me.
