Egg pipped last night, now nothing :( Is this a bad sign? FIRST HATCH

Aww its so hard i know. Ive never had to help a chick out. Hope someone will pipe up here for you... On the learning centre page it tells you how to intervine if needs be. Im rooting for you hun. Ive got 8 more babies in my bater.. Keep us posted :)

As long as there are holes in the shell where it can get air I would give it at leased another day. I have had a rough hatch this time around to. I have 3 out of 23 eggs thanks to my DH letting the bator heat up to 104-5 for long period of time then cooling it down to 95ish really fast. Anyway....
1st egg was pipped this morning when I got up, I had to leave. came home no change. all day no change. then this evening a 2nd egg pipped a very tiny hole.....
I checked for change then brushed my teeth and then went to bed.
All of the sudden right after I layed down I hear massive loud cheeping!
The 2nd chick has zipped almost whole egg and is trying to push the top off!!

I was thinking about opening to check the 1st egg that pipped to see if it was still alive but as the 2nd chick was hatching the 1st 1 began zipping a lil bit again. So by morning I shoud have at leased 2 if not 3 chicks!!!

Patients......... But its so tough.
Just remember if theres a hole in the shell it can breath air. If there was something wrong and it couldn't continue its proby already dead and 1 more day won't hurt. You don't want to jepordize the rest of the chicks shrink wrapping and dying for a single possibly dead already chick do you?

Sorry I am late to reply! Work stinks! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR MORAL SUPPORT! I am new to chickens and this community is so wonderful!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! I have a baby chick! How is got here you will all slap me for, but it is fine and doing well so my bad behavior didn't hurt it. Last night I couldn't take it anymore so I did a small hole around the pip. No blood, but I could see the membrane around the chick. i don't know what shrinkwrapped looks like, and I don't know if that was it, but to my eyes the chick was strong, pushing, but couldn't break the membrane. SO I wrapped it in a warm wet paper towel and started to cut more away. It bled a little so I stopped. a few nervous hours later I tried again. The only way I can describe it is that the chick was telling me it wanted out. it wasa gut feeling. It was really agitated and strong. So i did more and more, waited, did more, waited, then eventuallyeverything was out but the bum but it was STILL stuck so I took the whole **** thing off. He humped around, cheeped and went to sleep. So did I. In the AM, he was still wetter than I thought he would be, but drying. The other chicks have all piped but i am afraid for them because of all the activity last night. today is their due date. he was early and I know why - he is a fiesty little guy! I SWEAR I WILL NOT LAY A FINGER ON THOSE! I just had a feeling about this one. I don't know if I helped him or hurt him, but he's out and pecking at food and pecking (very little) at some Sav-A-Chic solution I made. He is in the incubator (with a brief recess to meet my kids!) waiting for his mates. He is a Araucana so his little rumpless bum is too cute! I can't seem to post a pic by cutting and pasting, anyone have directions for me?

Glad it worked out for you! I lost my slow chick last night...:(
I used the tubing I use to add water and I poked n moved the egg and didn't get anything so I did open the window and removed the dead chick.

Anyone know how long its safe to leave a dead chick in the bator? My humidity is at 70% and I just added some water to the egg carton before opening the window so it will go back up quick. I only have 1 other egg to hatch and it hasn't pipped yet so I felt pretty safe opening at this point but how long can I wait if I have 1 die next time?

These are my babies! I have another one that is black with white wing tips that isn't doing so hot - I think it MAY have mushy navel :(. What will these Araucana babies look like? And also - I think people make too much of helping a chick - if you really think a chick is slow, and you work slowly with no blood, I don't think helping it is sooooo bad. I think maybe the person who lost the "slow" chick followed advice versus instinct and maybe that's a lesson - sometimes instinct rules! I lost a "slow" one this time because I promised to keep my hands off of all the other eggs (but the first, which I helped!), and it died. So really helping it could only have helped in the long run. It was going to die anyway. And, the one I helped that seemed so desperate to get out totally has that personality now - all "go" all the time - it is SO fiesty it goes after my kids at not even a day old! I don't know - I speak out of total chicken ignorance and lack of experience! But even with parenting real kids, and now translating this to chickens, I think sometimes the gut feeling should be followed versus advice. Again - total lack of experience on my part!

I agree totally with your post! I too have gone against what I feel, because I think staying hands off is the "right" thing to do...and I have lost chicks that I'm sure I could have saved!! People say "What's meant to be...", but I also have to take into consideration the flaws of incubation! We, by no means, do as well as mother nature...so I think every chick deserves the best shot we can give them!!!! Congrats on your babies!!!
