I agree totally with your post! I too have gone against what I feel, because I think staying hands off is the "right" thing to do...and I have lost chicks that I'm sure I could have saved!! People say "What's meant to be...", but I also have to take into consideration the flaws of incubation! We, by no means, do as well as mother nature...so I think every chick deserves the best shot we can give them!!!! Congrats on your babies!!!These are my babies! I have another one that is black with white wing tips that isn't doing so hot - I think it MAY have mushy navel. What will these Araucana babies look like? And also - I think people make too much of helping a chick - if you really think a chick is slow, and you work slowly with no blood, I don't think helping it is sooooo bad. I think maybe the person who lost the "slow" chick followed advice versus instinct and maybe that's a lesson - sometimes instinct rules! I lost a "slow" one this time because I promised to keep my hands off of all the other eggs (but the first, which I helped!), and it died. So really helping it could only have helped in the long run. It was going to die anyway. And, the one I helped that seemed so desperate to get out totally has that personality now - all "go" all the time - it is SO fiesty it goes after my kids at not even a day old! I don't know - I speak out of total chicken ignorance and lack of experience! But even with parenting real kids, and now translating this to chickens, I think sometimes the gut feeling should be followed versus advice. Again - total lack of experience on my part!
