So I noticed on Friday at about 8 or 9 in the morning that one of my eggs had just barely begun to Pip. It is now 10pm on Sunday. I can hear the baby actually peeping in the egg but it has yet to zip. Should I be concerned? It's been at least 61 hours since I firat noticed it pipping.

Also don't feel this really requires a photo but I have to put one so here is the mama brooding.

Did it hatch??

48 hours is not unheard of for a duck to hatch. They are extremely slow. Yes, it’s usually faster, but 40-50 is not uncommon.

Personally, if it were me, I'd assist right now. At this point they are at a higher risk for water retention in their legs, and/or other health problems. The other option is to just let nature take its course.

I decided to open the egg a tiny bit and it wasn't at the air sack end of the egg. So I put a tiny bit of tape over the one hole and very careful open the other side. Only to be greeted by a little bill. So I'm keep it inside and incubating it myself. Gonna let the little guy do the rest of the work it's self because sadly I did nic a tiny vessel. It stopped bleeding pretty quick but I don't want to hurt it further.

So perhaps the chip in the shell was caused by an outside source? I'm sure it'll be fine, but the risk of shrink wrapping is high. I had a hen squash the entire side of an egg, and I covered it with wax. I had to do a full assist, but it stayed in the egg for two more days and when the other chicks hatched I helped it out. It's a year old now!

Sadly this little guy did not make it. I do have another egg that is pipping. So in roughly 8 hours I will check it and if it has zipping I will take it in and incubate it.

Generally if a chick/duckling doesn't hatch by itself, if means it probably won't make it anyway IMO.

I trust all goes well with the other egg.
So far the others are doing okay. I've been letting my mama do most the work but I've noticed once an egg cracks. If I don't get it before she notices the next thing I know the egg it busted open. Which is why I've been taking them as soon as they pip externally.

I was kinda wondering that but wasn't sure. Does wax work better than tape? I mean I would imagine so. I just never thought of it.
