I'm trying to figure out what's going on with our Black Australorp. She started laying around Labor Day weekend for about a week and then stopped. Our RIR have all started laying and she's started a little also.

She's the only one who won't lay in a nest box (actually lays on top or on the ground). We've gotten a couple of eggs in the past couple of weeks.

However, the disturbing thing is she's also laid three "eggs" that are not complete with a hard shell - rather a soft membrane, paper looking shell with the white and the yolk.

Can anyone help determine what the problem is and whether it can be remedied?

It's not unusual for hens to lay shell-less eggs when they're young. But the problem may also be that she's not getting enough food or enough calcium. Mine get all the Layena they want, plus oyster shell in a side bowl. I also crush the egg shells up as I make breakfast and toss that to them too.

My black australorp has laid 4 eggs on top of the nest, 1 egg in the nest, 5 on the ground next to the nest? For the last egg she laid it in a nest of straw she made next to the box? Time for fake eggs I guess?
