Egg Question

the people at the feed store has the unmedicated in in the flock raiser but once they found out that they were close to laying they said i needed the layer food to help them to lay eggs is that true

No... Just get some oyster shell and set a dish of that out for them, too. That will give them the calcium they need.

NevadaRon is exactly right. I have several ages of chickens, and I only feed medicated chick starter until chicks are 8 weeks old. Then everybody gets grower/finisher feed (the equivalent of FlockRaiser) and I put out crushed oyster shell free choice for those that need it. I keep an empty tuna tin, nailed to a coop wall, full of it all the time, plus I toss some outside in one particular place where they know where to go to get it.

This will take care of the layers.

When my oldest chicks were ready to come off the chick starter/grower, I went to Flock Raiser and put out a tuna tin of oyster shell. Worked great for all the different aged chicks...all the eggshells are very strong and they are very healthy with the Flock Raiser.

well today i picked up some unmedicated grower feed they do not have the flock raiser feed at all they have starter/grower and laying around here i also picked up some oyster shells. My question is will it be ok for them to continue to eat the grower till the other ones get ol enough to eat the layer and also do i need to start the oyster shell now or wait for the first egg. They are 19 weeks old this weekend

I didn't start oyster shell until I had an egg but my first egg came the day the pullet was 16 weeks old and we were just then putting the nesting boxes in...she paced and sang and my DH was hurrying.
