Egg questions

soft shell eggs usually are rare in a normal flock. but you are getting them from more than one chicken in a small flock.
are they getting laying ration ?
If the answer is yes, then I ask: do you give them treats?
my guess is yes..
quit with the treats if you are giving them laying rations.
treats dilute the amount of protein in the overall diet.
I could explain this to you, but I think you might be able to figure it out..

The soft shell eggs were from one chicken. Just started on layer feed as they are just now 17 weeks old. Oyster shell available at all times. They get free range time everyday. Scratch given only a few times a week. I toss weeds from my flower garden into the run for them to to scratch through. They occasionally get mealworm treats but not very often. I've had chickens for almost 5 years. Just getting multiple eggs, soft shell or otherwise, from just one chicken in a 24 hr period was new to me. I have 12 girls.

Very interesting! Never seen the 'fractured air sac'? If that were to happen in a viable fertilized egg, would that develop regularly or would that hinder growth? I imagine that that is rare enough that I will not encounter it but would be interesting to know.

The eggs that had the detached and 'fractured'(sounds better than bubbly) did not hatch well. Some did, some didn't. Some reattached on the side and hatched, some never reattached and did not hatch/develop, the bubbly one started to develop but quit at 4-5 days.

'Shipped eggs' often have 'detached air cells'.....do some searching on those terms for more info.

Another new egg anomaly that I haven't seen or heard of happening. 2 soft shell eggs that are attached. See pic. Found this in the run this evening. I know it's from the same girl, Miss Ruby the FR. She's always the last one to the roost.
