Does anybody know what the egg laying record in a year is for a Cayuga? I always heard they were a "moderate egg layer", but my Cayuga duck has hardly missed a beat since she started laying in early Feb. I originally got ducks for something different in the flock and let's be honest, because ducklings are so cute! But I've been really impressed. She lays better than any of my chickens!

I don't know what the record is, but my Cayugs's are doing the same. Both of them haven't missed a day since they started laying in mid Feb. The size of their eggs is very different though. The ducks are about the same size but one lays huge eggs around 90 g each and the other ones lays around 75 g size eggs. I don't know why the size difference they eat the same and are the same age. But they both taste great.

I'm not sure what the record is, but the average for a Cayuga is 100 - 150 eggs per year.

Mine started her first egg on August 22, 2010. Up to today (April 19, 2011) she has laid 145 eggs so far.

That brings up an interesting question. I've always assumed that the "eggs per year" average meant the number of eggs laid in one calender year (January through December), or in one breeding/laying season. I used to keep records of how many eggs were coming from each pen every year, but I started a new spreadsheet every January.

Also, ANY breed of duck is going to lay a higher than average number of eggs if you live in a warm, sunny climate or provide supplemental light. And with every breed, their first lying season is the most prolific. Egg production will decrease every year after the first.

Hmm... I guess I always assumed for a record it was whatever consecutive 365 days the duck laid in. Especially since the age of the duck during certain seasons would vary how many eggs you get. We are in Iowa so I assume she'll slow down next winter, but she did well when she started laying in Feb. and it was far from warm or bright then. I'm not sure what size the eggs are as I don't have an egg scale, but would be interested to find out. She has had two double yolkers that were hugs!

I actually emailed the ALBC and they don't know what the record is either. They did say records are counted as 365 consecutive days, regardless of when the count starts. I'm starting to wonder if the is a record on file for the Cayuga. Duckaholic, are your still laying every day? I'm up to 52 straight days!
