Egg shell color question

So, I got chickens and one is finally laying. I was outside and heard a squawk so I went to check. My fattest "Americana" was in the nesting box brooding over her egg. I managed to snag the egg and replace it with one of my fake eggs but...the egg is tan. Americana's are supposed to lay green Easter like eggs. So does this mean these are not Americana chickens?

I'm not great with breeds but those are most assuredly NOT Ameraucana chickens. Ameraucana chickens have pea combs, beards and muffs. Your chickens have none of these characteristics. You've got tan/brown eggs coming from these pullets.

The chickens in the photo look very much like buff orpingtons! Not Americana's or even easter eggers. Did you know that when you crack open a brown egg the inside of the shell is white. When you break a green or blue egg the inside of the shell is the same green or blue!

And some chickens like to rest on their egg for a while before leaving the nest That doesn't mean they are broody. A broody hen you will know!

Well the farm store I got them from just got a phone call. I know nothing about this buff orpington type chicken. I was really looking forward to Americaunas...from look to egg to personality. Thanks for the help on this.

Orpingtons are a really sweet kind of bird and they are pretty good egg layers. My lavenders are really good birds and they are hardy winter birds.

Americanas will lay various colors including brown or white and are different than Americauna. To confuse me more the picture attached didn’t look like either breed. I did think as well Buff Orpington in the picture which also lays large brown eggs.

Your pullets are Buff Orpingtons and they lay brown eggs.
“Americanas” as they’re commonly sold as are actually Easter Eggers. Now Easter Eggers are just a mixed breed bird that may have the blue egg gene. Most lay green eggs but some will lay blue, pink, yellow, or brown.
True Ameraucanas and true Araucanas lay only blue eggs and they are expensive and hardly any hatcheries sell them.

Thanks...living in michigan I was worried how they will tolerate the cold. They are huge and I do know when I pick up one of my buffs and hold her close to my body she lays her head on my chest....they seem sweet.
