I let my girls free range as much as possible, and I found my best layer eating egg shells in the compost.

Since they are just starting to lay, could she be missing something from her diet (I've heard of giving them oyster shells)

Or..... Could she now have the taste for eggs/shells???

Egg shells never make it into my compost in the first place because I save them all, dry them out, and give them to the girls. I've found that they only take what they need - they seem to know when they are lacking. If I am feeding layer formula, they don't eat much of the egg shell but when I have youngsters growing out and have to feed the whole flock a grower formula, the layers go nuts over the egg shell and eat a ton of it. So I save it year round so I'll have enough to satisfy them during the times they need it most.
