Grit and oyster shell should be given free choice. They will eat what they need when they need it. Its no different than putting out salt and mineral blocks for horses. They know when their bodies need more and consume it. Grit is used for digestion in the gizzard. It grinds the food up. Oyster shell is eaten and digested. You really can't substitute one for the other.
