Hello. My name is Melanie. I am new to raising chickens. My girls have started laying eggs last week but the size is smaller than predicted for Plymouth Rock. It is hot here in Tennessee. Any advise?

When pullet first start laying, their first eggs are pretty small. They will increase in size as your girls age and molt :)

I can't remember when I took that first photo but the one on the left and the green one were pullet eggs and the other was a hen's egg. I took the second a week or so ago, again a pullet egg versus a one-year-old hen's egg.

You'll notice two things about them. Pullet eggs get bigger as the chicken gets older. The other is that the eggs lighten in color over time. The first pullet eggs and the first eggs laid after a molt are as dark as they will ever be. Over time they get lighter.

Yeah as time goes on they will get bigger. Here is a pic showing my first layer verses my second and third. You might also occasionally get a huge egg out of a pullet as they sort out the kinks.

Hello! :welcome Glad you joined the flock! Yes, pullets laying small eggs is normal. As time goes on they will increase in size. My pullets just started laying including a plymout rock and her eggs are small but I believe they will get bigger like the rest of my hens did.;)
