Egg sizes

I have my girls on a 22% protein layer pellet for "all fowl" and they are free range too so in between the snow, they do get out on the grass. I also supplement with bags of greens from the store, plain yogurt and other kitchen scraps. I don't give them the treats until after noon so I try to make sure they eat the pellets first.

Hmm. It sounds like you have things well in hand ... especially with three feeding stations. As you know, obviously, more than one feeding station often ameliorates many pecking order feeding issues/problems. I have two right now just so I don't have to worry about problems. It makes life just that much easier ... less to worry about.

So the only last thing I can possibly come up with is that maybe the 22% protein layer pellet for all fowl isn't actually for chicken layers, but is more of a growing pellet. ???? A layer pellet will have balanced calcium/phosphorus/magnesium mix especially formulated for layers because making an egg every day or so really requires a lot of calcium/phosphorus balanced with a little magnesium. Those amounts are elevated in layer feed. Usually a layer pellet isn't going to be 22% so that's why I wonder about the whether the all-fowl feed is formulated properly for layers. 22% is usually for chickens that are being fed to be eaten or for starter feed for chickens. "All fowl?" As in maybe for turkeys and guineas also??? I am not familiar with "all fowl" feed, so maybe someone else who feeds this to laying hens can help out. Maybe it's something new that I'm not yet aware of.

Truly, at this point, I don't know. I think I might take that 22% all fowl feed tag from the bag and compare it to a standard layer feed tag (that can be found on feed web sites--it's the "feed analysis" tag) and make sure that the calcium/phosphorus level is similar. But I am grasping at straws.

Beyond that, I would just enjoy the small-sized egg and not worry about it.

-- especially since all your other layers are doing just fine on the feed.

Thanks again. I think I'll change to the regular laying pellets and just keep doing everything else nutrition wise. My grandkids love the little eggs so if they never get any bigger, I'll be fine with it. I just thought it was strange that the eggs were getting smaller instead of larger...
Thanks for all the input.

So sorry for your loss of Thelma. It sounds like she was a real character.

I am glad for Louise's sake that your tagline states that you have a few other chickens.
