Egg Song and Neighbors

I'm glad my neighbours have chickens themselves as my hens sometimes sing the 'egg song' very enthusiastically with all the others joining in to congratulate them!

Hope that you either have understanding neighbours or your hens are not the sort who feel they have to congratulate each other every time they lay an egg,

Good Luck,
Sandie

My load mouths are the Silkies and Faverolles. I can count on one or the other to be singing the loudest. I am grateful that most of the neighbors are working by the time they get to singing. I live in a rather small sub-division, so I have worried that sooner or later someone will complain. I just mostly pay the closest neighbors off with eggs. I also know that they are not as loud as the big dog is when he is barking.

Get geese. Nobody will notice how loud your chickens are in comparison.

oh boy, i'll be sweatin' it in 2 - 4 weeks. my 5 girls will be 4 months old next week. i know i should be expecting eggs this month or next. and i am an illegal chicken owner! my 2 neighbors beside me already know i have chickens. i asked them if they would mind me getting chickens before i even ordered my chicks. they were fine with it. although one of my neighbors said "will they be loud?" i told her about the "egg song" and she said she guessed that they wouldn't mind if i got chickens. i hate that i even have to ask. and yes, i agree that the dogs in the neighborhood are much louder! along with motorcyles, ambulances etc. one of my EE girls is a loudmouth when i try to pick her up. all the girls are tame, and my loudmouth loves me....but only when i pick her up....she's just GOTTA cluck kinda loudly! and i'm a gentle chicken handler. i often wonder if she'll be my egg-song-girl. and when they start singing....i wonder if i'll freak out and get rid of the loud ones right away? or will i just let them sing away and hope for the best? i have no idea yet.

None of my freeloaders are singing yet but my rooster crows ALL DAY LONG.

Even though I am in a pretty rural area, I still worry about the neighbors. We have two acres which doesn't qualify us as agricultural. We are zoned residential with all other neighbors as agricultural. The closest neighbor has had chickens in the past but they aren't the friendliest. My other one up the hill said he didn't mind. My neighbor across the street (my neice calls him Wrong Turn) is a crusty hay farmer so I doubt he'd say anything.

If they have issues with my roo, I do have another home waiting for him. He is hubbies favorite though.

Some of my girls are loud and some are more quiet. Some sing alone, while others have everyone chime in. So far there have not been any issues, but my neighbor behind me has just revealed herself as a hillbilly crackpot, so I'm not sure what will happen. We are within city limits, and there is literally nothing in the code that pertains directly to chickens, except maybe sanitation and noise, so we are legal according to what I have read, and what I have been told by three people who work in the code enforcement office. Our neighbor alongside of us actually likes the egg song, and the one behind us never speaks to us (until she started yelling at me on Saturday evening), so no problems other than the one woman. She was having her "guests" at her home relieve themselves along the chainlink in full view of our yard, and the cemetary we live along. Actually calling the dog over to try and spray the dog.

If she causes any trouble. . . well. . . lets just say she will regret it for a long, long time. I'm not sure how things are going to go when she gets married in her yard in a month or so. . .

I was going to post along SkyWarrior's line - Get a rooster. After a couple months of that, get rid of him. Your hens will seem like they're singing pleasant opera.

Or you could get a couple nice loud ATVs and run them all the time. Crank up the music. Have a few wild parties.

Everything in life is perspective. We just need to acclimate our neighbors to appreciate our beautiful hen songs.
