I’ve forgotten who posted the information here, but the “egg song” (screech) is actually thought to be an escort call to a rooster. Laying an egg leaves a hen vulnerable and they will call to their rooster to come escort them back to safety.
Mine go off any time someone lays an egg, but also when the hawks are in the area and they are hiding. Then they call their rooster (ie Me) to come escort them back to their run and safety.
