Egg Song

My whole flock sometimes choruses, sort of in a round - lots of bawking with alternating birds doing the ba-GAWK.

I definitely observed this year's youngsters using the egg song to locate their mom or the flock. It wasn't until they were older that it started to really sound like the egg song though.

Just so ya'll know, the egg song is a trait from foraging jungle fowl.
The flock will be foraging and a hen gets the urge to run to the nest. The rest of the flock continues to forage and when she's done she calls out "bluck bluck bluck (hey, where are you guys?). The rest of the flock answers in kind.
If roosters get separated from the flock they make the same call.

ETAIt doesn't matter if the rest of the flock is standing right next to them. It's ingrained and they can't help it.
Fascinating stuff.

One of my roos helped my RIR sing her egg song today! It's only her second egg, so I guess it is something to sing about. Both eggs have been solid and well formed with nice hard shells, so she can be proud, far as I'm concerned!
