Egg stealers

They are actually Miniature American Eskimo, (circus dogs) sometime called a German Spitz, and Choclate Lab !!! Mom was a 20lb, pure white MAE, and the father was a 65lb CL.

They are sibs from 3 different litters …. Juju, bitch, is from the first 1 pup litter, same parents as mentioned above. Roobee, bitch as well, same parents, but with a brother named Max, and here is where it becomes interesting …..

Max fathered, with his mother, Gomer, (yes inbred) who is the runt of a litter of 3. So Max is Gomers' father-brother-uncle !!! And his sisters are actually his aunts as well !!!

These were "rescued" at weaning from the neighbor who obviously had no regard for his pets. I'll say no more on that !
Caponizing ! Had to look that one up ….. Yikes ! I can see the benefits though, as I have castrated hogs in the past. Don't believe I'll be goin there anytime soon !

Oh that's gross animal abuse. I am glad that you rescued them.

Our bulldog took two eggs out of my basket one day...I was waiting to go back and collect the rest..then..poof, they were gone! Hours later we found them down in her dog bed, unbroken, all snuggled up. She held chicks in her mouth before and let’s them walk on her...we think she wanted to go broody.. I think the retrainin* the hens sounds like a great idea...then you don5 have to watch over everyone for the eggs so closely

We caponize our extra cockerels it makes them more docile and also more plump, tender, juicy and flavorful. In my country people don't like refrigerated meat and the Cornish cross chickens are considered cheap and flavorless. A capon will fetch thrice the price of a Cornish cross.

I hope this thread belongs in this section as it pertains to 3 egg stealers.
Here's the setup ….. I recently acquired an established flock of 1 rooster, and 8 hens. I have 3 sweet dogs that love to watch and protect the new arrivals. The hens apparently are (mostly) not laying in the nesting boxes, but stashing them outside somewhere, on their free range territory.

Although the hounds are forbidden in the coop, the dogs keep bringing me eggs they find hidden on their territory. They brought me 13 eggs yesterday alone, and ate at least 3 that I know of.

They are very docile K9s, and have very soft mouths, and only damaged a couple of the eggs, except the ones they ate of course !!!

Is this a problem, or a blessing ? I have no idea where the dogs are finding these eggs, but they are bringing most of them to me. I'm not sure if I should praise them, or punish them ?!?

Today I plan to carefully watch both the fowl, and the hounds to try to figure this out.

Here is a pic of the offenders, From left to right - Roobee, Juju, and Gomer …..

Thanks for any comments, or tips in dealing with this situation.
Beautiful babies trying to help. Lol. I would keep them in the coop and run for a short while so they establish new laying habits. I had a couple times that my egg count was down I kept them in the coop and run a day and things would get back on track.

Thank you for your input. I did have them in the coop / run for 4 days when I got them ….. That was 2 weeks ago, and I did get a couple eggs a day. I was thrilled !

I thought the low number of eggs was because of the winter weather, so I really didn't notice the low count once they started ranging.

Shortly after my original post, I went to let the chickies out, and a couple made a beeline towards the doghouse !

When they cleared out, this is what I found in the back corner ! Right now there is a line waitin to get into the doghouse !

No wonder the dogs were bringin me the eggs !

Little Gomer told me it wasn't fair that the chickens could go into their house, but they couldn't go into the chicken house !!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!! Fabulous!! You made my day!!

Hi! We are in the same boat it seems lol!
You'll have to move the dog house into or near your coop, seriously they looove those things....those and carriers.
Mine have a spacious coop with many proper nest boxes yet the floor is lined with dog houses and carriers that they fight over to use.
I think the enclosed aspect is of them comforting, im just glad the dog passed on or i'd have an issue. :)
