Egg storage

Washing with water only doesn't affect storage time. The washing that removes the protective coating is washing with bleach as is cone to commercially sold eggs.
This I didn't know either. I only use water and the dish scrubby, so it might have a bit of soap. But again, they are eaten within 7 days usually. :)

We leave our eggs out for a month at least but ee keep the house in the low 60s. No problems still.

My fridge broke once before I had chickens.
I ate Washed American supermarket eggs that had been out of the fridge for a month and they were all fine. I've actually never seen a rotten egg in my life. Refridgerating eggs is overrated

Really?! This I didn't know... even in hot weather... I did know about the test, but didn't think to employ it for this... Thanks, I will keep that in mind. :)
The tossing eggs, can they be cooked and fed back to the chickens?

If you do the float test and an egg floats it just means that it is not real fresh, not necessarily bad enough to toss. Just break it in a seperate bowl or cup and check it out. Good chance that it is still good. Don't toss a good one! :)

My counter top is actually too small to store them all there. so I keep the freshest eggs on the counter, to put under potential broodies

.............a dozen or more. THEN, the older ones go to the in laws or the fridge....merely for storage. I can grab the fridge ones without worrying about eating the wrong ones! We have different breeds, so right now, the prime eggs for hatching are the blue and white ones......and one brown from a certain hen. The rest, as well as the ones older then 2 weeks......get to be supper...or breakfast...

I have about 20 dozen in the spare fridge, so even though I have the counter space... no way do I want that many eggs on the counter! lol I don't brood any either, so nothing needed there... maybe in the future.. though my hopes is that the hens work all that out themselves.. though not sure how good of a baby daddy my Polish will be for egg laying purposes! But again... 20 dozen in the fridge... I don't think a few eggs less will kill us?! lol
Anyhoo.. that article from Mother Earth was interesting. :)
