LOL!! Yeah, looking at that picture made me hurt! O.O

I am glad, as I'm sure the others are, to have been of assistance if I was.

I have been following your great instructions. She is isolated in the dog crate in the dark shed. I am bringing her in to rinse her vent in the sink with warm water then applying the Prep H. Pushing the prolapse in (she is not liking on that) and holding my hand over it for a few minutes.

I have ACV in her water and am feeding her bread soaked in milk.

How long does this usually take to stay in?

Thank You

You don't want to just rinse the vent. That is not going to help much at all other than irritating it. She needs to be in a tub of warm water, down in the water, with her vent submerged. Put some epsom salts and sugar in the water. If you don't have epson salts just use sugar, or just the warm water. Let her soak in it for at least 10-15 minutes. Do this several times a day. This will help the prolapse naturally shrink and go in on its own. Use lube like KY jelly (without additives) or some vasoline or olive oil and gently push it back in.

i'm not sure about the nutritional value of bread and milk, or how that helps. You do want to make sure she eats something else, like her regular chicken feed. Chopped hard boiled eggs and yogurt would be good.

I have not been out yet this am but last night she seemed depressed. But she is used to free range and she is in lock down. She vent is still prolapsed. I am cleaning it, applying Prep H , and pushing it back in, three times a day.

How long does this usually take? Is this a normal amount of time. It still looks very sore.

I want her to be OK.

Thanks

If she is seeming depressed, it is probably that she is in a lot of pain. i think your only option at this point is to get her into a vet that treats chickens. Some avian specialists will see chickens. They need to do a stitch inside to keep it in place.

When my hen prolapsed, i followed my vets instructions with the warm soaks in a tub of water with epson salts and sugar, and she was healed within 24 hours.

At this point, if you can get her to a vet, that would be best. Usually they go in within the day I think? I'd recommend it.

She probably is depressed if she's apart from the flock. What about the other stuff - feeding her up and stuff. Are you doing more than repairing the prolapse at this point?

I would take her to a vet at this point but I have none in the area that know squat about chickens. I work for a veterinary hospital and they agree with me. If I take her to a vet that knows nothing about chicken I am basically paying them to experiment. We don't have any extra money to be doing that.

The vet I work for will euthanize her if I want but I am trying to do my best to avoid that. I will not let her suffer. I don't know what to do at this point.

Thank you

I am , or i should say the kids, are feeding her favorite treats while I soak her and treat her. She loves the kids and eats and talks to them while I do the dirty work.

She seems depressed when I go it to the shed to get her but perks right up when we are treating her.

I just spoke with a vet I worked with years ago that lives in my town and has chickens. He said it sounds like I am doing every thing right. The other option would be to put a stitch in it but that doesn't always work.

I guess I will keep trying but if she seems to be going down hill I will have her put to sleep.

Thank you for your help and concern..

Karen
