Egg Swiping at Shows

Thanks to the OP that start this post I have leaned a lot, I don't show bird yet but have thought about it I have sure learned a bunch from everyone that has posted, when we went to the fair I did see eggs in the pen and one of my kids asked what they did with the eggs at the time I did not have chickens so I said I did not know maybe this year I will ask a few people and see what they say maybe we could get some hatching eggs that way. thanks for all the information it has answer some questions I did not even know I had.

My bird crazy son did take over 30 eggs left at our show only one hatched then died I would guess only 2 or 3 were fertile serious poeple that show take the hens and seperate them anyhow. But he did have fun trying

You gave this person far more courtesy than was expected (edited to change to what they were entitled to), and they had the gall to come back and try to get compensation? That's absurd to say the least. I once left a call duck at our state fair. I was sick while cooping out, thought I had everyone, and drove home. Thank gosh the show super called me and told me I'd left a duck and they would hold it safe for me for the night, allowing me to go back and get it the next day. I am grateful to him for that. It's a courtesy as a show committee they do not have to give.

Sounds like that person who was a year late didn't give a toot about the birds and they are no doubt better off without his/her forgetful mind.

Yeah, the show catalog gets longer and longer. It seems like every year we have to add a new rule to avoid a dispute that came up the year before. My suspicion is that no one reads the show catalog anymore.

Wow. I had no idea that a chicken show could be so interesting, and fraught with adventure!

Reading this was like watching "Best in Show".

I am definitely going to figure out when the next chicken show will be locally and go check it out. I bet it's the state fair, but who knows.

This happened to me at fair. They stole my first duck egg.

A friend who shows a lot said most exhibitors he knows keep an eye out for eggs from their hens and destroy them so no one can hijack their line without paying for it. Most eggs aren't fertile because the hens have been separated for conditioning but he doesn't take any chances. His eggs get destroyed, not collected by the staff.

There are plenty of lowlifes out there who steal people's top show birds too (after the judging, of course)! It's just not safe to show anymore. Not unless you want to stick a chair in front of your cages & babysit your birds the whole time. Not feasible for a 2 day show or a week long fair. Some people just suck.
