I have a 4 month old Black Australorp hen, and she is showing tell tale signs of laying an egg soon. She dug herself a burrow in her nesting box and sat on on of the golf balls I put in there, her comb and wattle are getting very big and red very fast, she just got a lot heavier, and whenever I go to touch her she squats down and wags her tail. Do you think I could get an egg tomorrow? Is there anything to do to help encourage the egg laying her help her feel ready?

Maybe! I would guess at least in the next week. I have a chicken, Sam, who is 17 weeks old and doing the same thing for a few days. I’m impatiently waiting for her eggs! (They’re green, so I’m curious what they’ll look like)
Her comb is getting humongous!

She has access to oyster shell, right?

Also, when my hen first starts laying, will her laying consistency be continuous, or off and on?
I’ve noticed sometimes I’ll get one egg when they start, then it they might take a week long break before laying another one, but for some birds they just start laying every day.
