I wanted to follow up here to share more of Stella’s story. After spending over $200 to take our sweet girl to the vet, my partner in life convinced me to wait a few more days to give the antibiotics a chance to work. I was doubtful given what I had read and ultimately didn’t think she would pull through, so why out her through that?

He was right. Stella made a comeback. It took her a little while to have the strength to move around with the flock and to roost at night. But she’s now recovered. After a while she started laying again. Her eggs are not formed correctly most days, so I’ve been keeping an eye on her for signs of EYP, but so far so good. I wish she would just stop laying, and she might come fall.

Oh, I am so glad that she has recovered somewhat from her illness. Hopefully, she will stop laying eggs altogether, and give you some more years to enjoy her company.

Thank you for the update! This is great news. Maybe ypu’ll be lucky snd she’ll have a long, sloe molt that takes her put of lay.

I also wanted to add, my feeling is that hens really need the hormones suppressed if they’re going to get through these serious reproductive issues. However, the hormones are expensive, and send them into a mini molt. For my hen who is on hormones currently, the benefits definitely outweigh the downside. Something to consider. It’s not for every hen with repro issues or chicken keeper, however. I think some people just drained their bird’s abdomen and treat with antibiotics occasionally. I have also had some success with Lily of the Desert aloe detox to help with swelling.

Edited to add, when I heard she had yolk and old blood in her cavity, I considered euthanasia very seriously. I had a couple tears out in the parking lot trying to decide what to do. I decided to give her one last try with the hormones and antibiotics so even if she does eventually succumb, I’ll send her out on a happy note. This might be her last hurrah. Time will tell.

May I ask how much and how often you have the Lily of the desert aloe detox did you give her and for how long?
Lastly do you know if it will interact with any of the medications she's currently on which is
SMZ-TMP, calcium and Gabapentin?
