egg yolk peritonitis?

How much did all of this cost? I am just curious for future in case I have another episode of egg yolk peritonitis?
Thousands, literally. I stopped counting because it's too depressing. But she's my responsibility and there was no other choice besides putting her down.

How can she be rapidly recovering when all I've heard about and heard on this site it's a death sentence it gets hard and balled up and you can't get it out unless you kill your bird
I don't know long term how she will fair. I have been unable to find much info on the subject. There was a duck (Crackers) I read about at waterfowl sanctuary in CT who had this surgery and implant in 2014, but have been unable to find out the outcome after that. Our vet removed the yolk that had adhered to various organs, repaired her air sac, and inserted the hormonal implant. Her oviduct was not removed since it was healthy. Removal would not prevent future egg laying, and if she did lay for certain the egg would be deposited in her cavity which of course would lead to the same situation.

Hi what is the dosage of the medication you gave her can it be bought at a feed store?
I think one of my Amber whites has this as I've soaked her for the last 5 days so now I know she is not egg bound please help
She was on several meds, with various dosages over the past 3 weeks, for pain and inflammation, antibiotic, calcium. These have all been adjusted/discontinued. She was put on a different antibiotic after the culture came back and showed the first med to be ineffective for the type of bacteria found. Currently she has four days left on the antibiotic and is having her stitches out on Friday. As far as getting it at a feed store I have no idea. These were all administered by our vet.

Would you mind telling us what bacteria was found, and the names of all of the antibiotics you had her on? I think it would be helpful to know. :D

Does anyone know where I can get duramycin-10 in the powder form for chickens all they have is the duramycin for large livestock injectable they said January 1st they could no longer just sell it at the feed stores that I would have to go through a vet please help my chicken is not doing good
It will be almost impossible to find. :( You could try ordering some Baytril, but it's banned for use in poultry, so that's something to think about.

I'm sorry I don't know the particular bacteria that was detected (my daughter got the results) originally she was given Tmp-Smz 480mg tablet, 1/4 tablet very 12 hours. After the culture came back she was switched to Clavamox 375mg tablets, 1/2 tablet every 12 hours. She hates the meds at this point and has been quite aggresive at time with my daughter (her imprinted momma). This of course has upset my daughter greatly. I'm hoping this will pass once she no longer has the stress of being giving the meds.

Curious on how your baby is doing now.
What did they remove during surgery for her EYP? I just brought my baby home from the vet and they removed a rotten egg, a new egg and 3 cups of fluid. Still has a little fluid in her but I'm hoping it can drain and even become countered with meds.

They just had to mildly sedate her but no need for stitches or anything.

She's been doing very well. Back to her normal self. Hasn't laid any eggs, which is good. The hormonal implant seems to be working. We need to bring her back to be checked and get another implant soon. The vet was unsure how long the implant will work. Not too much info on the implant with waterfowl I was told. She had major surgery, stitches and all. The vet removed a soft shelled egg and egg matter. The egg matter had adhered to many of her organs including her lungs. So a major clean out was done. She also had a slight tear in one of her lungs. So that also was repaired. I hope your girl does well and recovers. I'm still very nervous that our girl will remain healthy and egg free.

Spoke too soon. The implant has worn off and our girl laid an egg. It was normal, not soft or misshapen which is good. Looks like she has another waiting to lay. We've been giving her kale everyday. Hopefully that will help with the calcium and laying normal hard shelled eggs. We'll just have to wait and see.

During the video the speaker holds up a bag of the antibiotic he used to treat his chicken: DURAMYCIN-10 I went back to the grange to get some. Very glad I did, because after only 24 hours she is nearly back to her old self; the swelling is down, she is active and standing more often, even making coos which she had not made for nearly a week! She is still quite lethargic and weak, but I think she is going to make it :) I will update this post. The video:
How much tetracycline and for how long did you treat your hen?

I think one of mine has similar. I examined her internally this AM and she doesn't have an impacted egg - no worms - no external signs - so I'm thinking bacterial infection.

Thank you!
Linda
