Hi,

We have 10 chickens in all (backyard-free), but 1 (6months old) is looking sorry for herself. She has difficulty moving about/sitting and her vent is enlarged with white liquid being excreted. Through online search, we've come to the conclusion that she could be eggbound and have tried a warm bath for 20 mins and now have her in our "sick bay" with some added warmth around her. Is this the best that we can do for her? If this is eggbound, then can we do anything preventatively in case it happens again in the future?

We also noticed whilst giving her the bath, that the water had 1cm long, transparent worms wriggling around. Does anyone know what these are? What we should do about them? And are they contagious?

Thanks for your help.

I'd search for posts about deworming chickens. I have never done it because it seems there are so few wormers approved for use in chickens, though I see a lot of people on this forum using them. Apparently pumpkin "guts" (the seeds, stringy stuff, etc) are a natural wormer. Hopefully someone else sees this and will know better what to tell you.

Sounds like you need to worm her. Get some Valbazen liquid wormer for sheep and cattle. Give her 1/2cc orally. (down her throat with a syringe without a needle) Redose her in 10 days.

Hi,

Now you mention it, they did look very much like maggots. Unfortunately, she died. Went rapidly down hill over the course of 24 hours. We tried all we could thinking she was eggbound, but it possibly was not that as now we have another chicken who is showing the same signs. I'm googling trying to work out what is wrong.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help

J
