yes, it can open its mouth fully. I put some coconut oil/gel on the end of a wire clothes hanger and went thru the tiny opening of the GQF vent plug and dabbed it on the membranes. If the membranes turn white, that is bad right? Or is it when they go tan?

When my two easter egger chicks hatched Sunday night, they themselves broke out their little sibling. They pecked and pulled at the opening and got him out. I was scared they would hurt it but they seemed to know what to do. I wish I could get them to do that for the duck.. lol.

White membrane is good. Brown is bad. If it just pipped yesterday morning, it will likely hatch while you are gone today, but should be fine. Ducks are amazingly slow hatchers.

They rest alot, and they pip earlier than chickens, and breathe the external air longer while finishing absorbing their yolk.

I am trying to be calm. I had a full sibling egg of this last fall. I had bought a cheap tiny incubator to try and hatch a egg from my hen when my rooster died and a egg from the duck at the farm because my duck had died while protecting my rooster and I was BADLY wanting to have my rooster and duck back. The chicken egg did not develop but the duck egg did and a week before hatch, the cheap incubator broke.... i TRIED to make a homemade one but had no way to monitor humidity and it shrunk wrap. It was A NIGHTMARE. It was born alive and died in my hand and I gave it mouth to bill respiration and that gave it another hour of life so at least he could open his eyes before it died. That really was upsetting... I bought a GQF incubator and ordered Silkie eggs in December and have the cutest flock right now. I only have the duck eggs now because the poor mom duck died on her clutch...

I was going to take my goose, Puddles, to work yesterday and when I set her down outside so I could change her paper bedding, she jumped up and headed to the back yard to her hutch. I scooped her up and put her in the kiddie pool to wash off, gave her the calicum shot and put her in the hutch and she went straight to her nest. When I got back though, she was back to not walking. I put her in the swimmy pool and gave her the afternoon shot and put a bowl of water and bowl of food in front of her with some oyster shell on top (I had to borrow some, I still have not had time to go to feed store, hoping my paycheck comes today, was due on the 7th)

It externally pipped on Sunday or real late Saturday... does that make a big difference?

OK, now it has its wing out and gives me a strong quack. I feel like it will make it with no more interference. Maybe it just needed some stimulation or maybe it did need that little piece here or there clicked off...
