Hey yall, I've spent like an hour reading other posts on here but I'm still not sure what's wrong with my sweetheart, Rosie. She's a 1yr old Sex Link, lays for me every day without missing a beat even during the 5ft of snow we got this winter. Today when I got home I noticed she's acting odd. She usually goes crazy for clovers but won't eat any, she's sitting with her tail kind of drooped down and you can see it pulsate like when she's about to lay an egg only she isn't laying and I think it might have been a few days ago that she stopped because there was only one egg in there today and I didn't collect since sometime earlier this week. Her eyes are bright and alert, she doesn't want me touching on her which is normal, she moves away, but her comb and wattles were pale. When I took her out and she got all flustered they went back to a nice red and appear to be okay now but obviously that wasn't right. She does have a large mushy crop but she has always sort of been that way and there is no smell. She had some darker brown poop stuck to the feathers around her vent but not pasty butt, didn't see anything odd in the pen as far as blood or weird colored poop. I have no idea what's wrong and she's very, very important to us. Does anyone know what is wrong and what should I do? Hubby is bringing her inside for me so I can watch her better. Thanks!

She could be eggbound. Can you feel her belly for an egg? It's a good idea to separate her and keep an eye on her.

Can't see or feel any egg. She's not acting sickly, more just like she wants to lay an egg-just sort of sits there like she's deep in thought but very alert still and can walk/move around fine. I brought her inside with me to keep an eye on her...she's never not laid before so this is very odd behavior from her. Thanks for the reply.

If she is eggbound, give her something high in calcium if you can get her to eat. Also, for eggbound chickens, warm baths (for 20 minutes). Both of these won't hurt your chicken if she isn't eggbound, and might help if she is.

Here's a pic of the way she looks right now (feather damage compliments of my RIR roo, LUCIFER) and two pics of her poop since I brought her inside. The last one was like almost mucousy but clear and light yellow. Going to give her a bath and see what comes of it-thanks for the suggestion. Anything else I can do for her if she is eggbound and the bath doesn't work?
