I’m too broke to be buying one baby chick thatI've never fed mine layer pellets or layer crumbles. I feed them an all flock type of feed and offer oyster shells free choice in a separate container. This way I don't have to worry if someone is laying or not, if I have babies or not or if I have a rooster or not. Everyone eats the same feed and the laying hens get their calcium as they need it. Usually the all flock has a higher protein content compared to most layer feed. So when they get scraps/greens/treats, I have wiggle room on the protein level.
Best thing is to find something they like that is easy for you to get. Nothing worse than finding a good feed then have trouble getting it. Everyone feeds a little different. Find what works for you.![]()
