Eggs about to hatch and hens are very aggressive... is this normal??

I have 6 layers and a rooster. At least two hens have been taking turns on 13 eggs. Today (or very soon) they should start hatching. Behavior is very different today - all the hens are flying up keeping me out of the coop, but also (and this is what is concerning me) they are pecking at the eggs. Is this normal? Should I try to separate them? I have a spot for mom and chicks once they are born, but I didn't want to move the eggs while she's sitting.

It is normal for them to be protective of the nest. Any chance they are pecking at you, but missing and hitting the eggs?
