Eggs but no song

I saw my hen drop an egg once. Up close. Opened the nesting box to collect eggs, peaked in and watched it squeeze out as she stood up startled. Pretty incredible thing to see. But I don't care to hang around to see it twice.

From my experience they really don't care if you watch. That said, I usually don't hang around while they're laying, since:

1) It can take hours! And yes I've sat around and watched a hen lay, mostly because I was dying to try a truly fresh egg (doesn't taste "better" IMO).
2) If they do see me, sometimes they'll pop out of the nest thinking I have treats. Though sometimes they'll squeeze the egg out real fast and then run off to look for a treat. Either way I hate feeling guilted into giving out a treat.

But yes the egg song can be a very random thing. Sometimes I hear all of them singing, sometimes no one sings, sometimes they sing but there's no egg. The song can go on for a few seconds or for 10, 15 minutes. I have noticed mine are more likely to sing in the morning vs. afternoon.
I have 25 hens so just going into the coop to gather eggs I see hens laying right in front of me frequently! I stay and watch, it always amazes me. My little wry necked Buff Orpington laid her first egg today and I was there to see it happen! Also saw one of my black giants lay today as well. I love chickens!:love

Well alrighty then that's graphic lol! You are aware they'll lay sitting on your lap or standing in the yard iv'e even seen them pop one out dust bathing. They need a lot of things but privacy is way down on the list. You're quite nice for trying to give them some reguardless.:)
Possibly but next time i have my menses no one is allowed to watch. Im actually wondering if this is just not ignorant human inference based on an action.

Im glad you think so. Im just being polite to the nice ladies. Anyways we do believe we heard the song today. No Name started squawking something horrible on our porch. Another one joined in from under the porch and then she ran down there. Havent seen a direct correlation between this and laying however
