I am new to raising chickens from chicks, i had adult chickens when i was young; but now that i am grown and have my own home i decided to buy some chicks, 4 buff orpingtons 4 rhode island reds 3 barred rocks 2 Japanese bantams. they are about 4 1/2 months old and still no eggs. when should i be expecting my hens to start producing?

You (and your birds) are almost there - just be patient a little longer and you'll start to see eggs. 18-28 weeks is the general age range, depending on breed -- and even with that in mind they all do things in their own time. In our current flock of 15 pullets from this spring, one BO started at 19 weeks, a SLW at 19 1/2 weeks and now a second SLW at 20 weeks -- with suspicions that either one of our other BO or a GLW has also contributed in the last couple of days (this weekend will be spent on nest box stake out to confirm who is/isn't participating in laying now).

You should be getting your eggs shortly. Most of the chickens I've had over the years have started laying from 20-24 weeks. Yours are close to the 20. Good luck.
