I live in a very cold part of Colorado. Lots of days during this time of year we don’t get over freezing temperatures during the day for conservative days. They have straw bails, wood shavings and lots of shelter area for during the day, and at night their coop has a heat lamp. My girls will lay eggs in there laying boxes. But lately I have been finding eggs on the coop floor. Two last night when closing the coop door and two this morning when I opened the coop door. I worry they are laying eggs at night because I have their heat lamp on all night and I’m throwing off their cycle. I also worry they may want/need a heat source in their laying boxes. Your thoughts on this situation are appreciated.

Be careful with that heat lamp around straw. Can you find another heat source for them? Like a heating pad? Heat lamps don’t produce a ton of light, but it may throw them off. If they’re not using the boxes, put a few fake eggs in there to make them think that others are laying in there. If one chicken does it, they’ll all do it.

Thanks for your comment, we made and metal grate enclosure for the heat lamp to prevent fires. I have placed fake eggs in the nesting boxes, tonight when I went to close their door I found another egg on the floor of the coop, but also one in a nesting box. Since their nesting boxes have bedding I might try placing a heat pad in that area to see if that helps.
