My silkie started laying on four of her own eggs a few weeks back and I was taking out all the other eggs that we didn’t want hatched. One day, I go to collect the unwanted eggs and there’s only three silkie eggs. Very strange. Another week passes and I open the coop and two eggs had hatched!! But there was no sign of the third egg. Where are these eggs going?!? No hens are harmed and no camera footage shows a predator. I don’t think it’s one of my chickens because there would have been evidence of yolk or shell bits, right? I’m baffled! And it’s only the silkie eggs that are going missing. Where on earth are these eggs going??

There wouldn’t necessarily be any shell or yolk evidence if a hen eats an egg. They can do an amazing job of cleaning up every bit. It’s possible that the broody decided an egg was not viable and ate it to keep the nest clean. Or she could have kicked it out of the nest and other hens ate it.

It’s also possible that a predator stole the eggs and just didn’t get caught on camera. But in that case, you would expect to see them all disappear because the perpetrator would keep coming back until there were none left.

Congrats on the two chicks!
