Eggs have a strong odor??

Okay, its just the Rhode Island Reds that have the odor and taste. Weird.

No nothing dead.

Someone else posted recently about eggs having a funk to them and switched them from medicated starter to layer rations and the weird taste went away. So first suspicion is that what they are eating is causing this.

All my chickens are eating the same food Layena, the Rhode Island Red's eggs still smell.....they are gross. Both my other chickens eggs are very good and have no odor. The eggs are not edible. You can really smell the funk when they are cooked, but even just cracking one open you can smell it.......

dont know what too do.

Trade her in for a more useful hen. I'd be interested in seeing if she has some kind of contamination going on in her eggs (like salmonella). I wonder if there is a place you could send them in for testing.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Funky eggs are usually related to a bird's diet. I hope you figure out what's going on.

Good luck.

Thanks, hopefully not salmonella..... i ate one a while back!!! This has been going on for months!!!

I had a similar problem a while back with my BPR and BO eggs. They had a very strong manure-like odor and taste. After eliminating all of the variables I could, I figured it must be the feed. I then realized that the eggs started to get funky around the same time I got a new bag of our usual brand of feed. I switched to a new brand of feed and the problem gradually went away. Although it has been several weeks, I still do individual smell checks when I crack each egg open.

As someone else mentioned earlier, maybe you got some feed from a funky batch.

Here is a link to a site with great information on both internal and external egg defects, including off odors and flavors. Sounds like you eliminated most (all?) of the possible causes discussed. The last bullet addresses persistent layers of off-flavor eggs. I've never heard of this but apparently it happens and the cause is difficult to determine. I'm sorry you are experiencing this with your hen. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/publications/1/egg-quality-handbook/36/off-odours-and-flavours

Thanks everyone for the useful information! I am almost out of food, so crossing the fingers for the next bag!!!
