@Teila ACV? is that apple cider vinegar? sorry so ignorant - just wondering 'cos I googled ACV and that is what it came up with. I assume it is rather something to do with liquid calcium.
Just asking because I do put liquid calcium in their water three times a week and didn't know it doesn't work in the heat.

Hey whoop whoop yep, ACV = Apple Cider Vinegar [with mother]. I believe that the issue in the hotter months is that the hens are eating less and therefore could be taking in less calcium with the acidity of the vinegar inhibiting the absorption of the calcium.

In the cooler months, when they are eating more and taking in more calcium, the inhibiting of the calcium absorption is not as critical.

Well, that is what my research has shown me.

So, it is not the liquid calcium that does not work in the heat, just that if you also provide ACV, it reduces the absorption.

Having said that, in our hotter months I still put ACV in some water containers and just fresh water in others. They drink from both and soft shells have not been an issue for me.

Tee hee .. yep, I hear ya! We had the mister going in the garden for them today and they were all standing around, puffing, wings out etc .. not to the point of concern or heat stress, just the normal for this weather.

I went outside to eat lunch and there was no puffing and the only reason for wings out was all the jumping they were doing as they were demanding "share!" Amazing how the presence of food took their mind off their being hot
