ok, i've been hatching eggs for some time now and i've had pretty decent hatch rates from eggs i've ordered or gotten from a nearby farm where they have mixed barnyard chickens. back in november i bought some production reds and golden comets from ideal poultry and my pullets just started laying eggs about a month and half ago. back then the eggs were kind of small, but now they are pretty good size so i decided to collect them and put them in my sportsman cabinet and just went to lockdown today. i set 48 eggs and discarded 12 for unfertility and 3 for bloodring so i ended with 33 for lockdown. ive heard that pullet eggs in not a good idea that i have to wait at least a year for my hens eggs to incubate......any ideas from anyone?........thx

Idea about what exactly? I think you will be fine. Bigger eggs should produce larger stronger chicks, and those chicks should in turn produce larger eggs ( if thats what you are breeding for) .

Sorry for the "Idea"....i meant suggestions about using the eggs of pullets for incubation.....i've heard that's a NO....NO.....since they are too young.

i always skip the first few weeks of laying until the eggs are large. after that i have never seen any problems. if you hatch from small eggs however, they never seem to grow right.

thanks loveourbirds, that's exactly what i did with my pullet eggs, i skipped for about 6 weeks until the eggs looked good size and collected them for the incubator....lets see how they turn out......thanks

keep me posted. on another note, typically eggs hatched from pullets our young hens will yield more pullets than roosters. its one of the tricks i use as a breeder to eliminate unwanted males.
