Eggs of my pullets just went to lockdown today......

ok, so my eggs finished hatching today and here is the results:

out of the 33 eggs that went to lockdown, 21 hatched, 2 died in the attempt to crack the shell (zipped halfway), and the remaining 10 died while in lockdown. so if counting the 2 that died in the attempt plus the 21 that hatched that makes it 23 out of 33 that would be a good 90% hatch rate.....that's not counting the 15 that were either unfertile or bloodring. one thing puzzles me, out of the 21 chicks 2 are a barred plymouth rock color and i dont have any barred plymouth rocks.....all i have are production reds, golden comets, and leghorns????..

Also, i have another batch of my pullet eggs due on the 23, i just candled them and out of the 48 eggs 8 were unfertile and 3 had bloodring so i have 37 going to lock down in 3 days.....lets see if i get more of those BPR colors.

just a guess, if your leghorns are gray leghorns they will have the barred gene. they may even appear white. on your production reds the barred gene may be present too but its less common I think.

hmmmm....i have the ideal 236 leghorns from ideal poultry, all white with 1 or 2 black dots in their body. its a cross developed by them but they dont say about the crosses they made.......interesting stuff.....

23 out of 33 would be closer to a 70% hatch rate wouldn't it? Which I would still be happy with. Hope mine do that well this weekend.

Oh no...not trying to. I have 37 eggs hopefully getting to hatch this weekend. Telling myself I will be ok with 50% hatch rate or better. Some of my eggs were getting old so not sure.....
