We just got our forst 2 hens Sunday. There was 2 eggs laid yesterday afternoon. How will we know if they are ok to eat? Do I just crack them open?

Thanks,
Vicki & Scott

Sure I'll bet they are wonderful.
If you've never had farm fresh eggs before they may taste a bit strong, which is better than the cardboard test of store bought eggs.
Congrats on your first eggs.

I don't know, I'm a newbie to chickens which is why I was asking the question.

So I just wash them in warm water and put in the fridge? The egg colors were amazing. One was a lightish brown/white and the other was a greenish/white.

I'll take some pictures.

Mine have collected for a few days before i took them out. Ther aare folks on here that don;t refrigerate their eggs at all. So they will be great and very tasty...

Just for safty sake I always open them in a seperate bowl before putting in recipes. Actually any egg. Fresh yard eggs have an almost orange yolk from all the good things your girls eat.

But they came from a chicken's butt, are you sure their safe?

OF COURSE you can......eat away! I don't even wash my eggs, until just before I'm gonna use them. They have protective coating on them that protect them from bacteria getting in them. I collect my eggs every day and put them in the fridge.

I wash eggs for my egg customers. I don't wash the ones we keep for our own consumption until we are ready to eat them; the bloom thing.
I collect them at least once a day, more often in really hot weather.
You want to wash them in water as hot as you can stand it.
