Good evening BYC. Not even sure if this is the correct forum to post this, but let's give it a shot. So for the past year, my hens' eggs have tasted like dirt!! We fried them up and it literally taste like dirt, no joke. Their coop is extremely clean, the eggs are clean, they eat a great soy free/organic diet for years now, and they have clean fresh water always. I even thought it was the frying pan so I changed that too. Still, some eggs taste like dirt. I have a flock of 11 that all lay, different ages and not all eggs taste like dirt. They free range and have access to greens. Has anyone experienced this before? I have had chickens for 12 years now, and last year was the first time this has started happening. Thoughts? Questions? Thanks!!

I know you said they have on the same feed for years.....what specific brand/formula? Even if you haven't changed feeds the miller/manufacturer may have. Any changes in the freezer range area as far as types of plants, turned over soil, new areas accessed? Are they accessing water sources in the free range area to drink other than the water you are providing?

Yes, they have been on Bar ale organic soy free chicken feed for quite some time. I just don't get it....some eggs do and some don't. Maybe they changed ingredients...or maybe one hen eats a specific bug that makes the eggs taste like this. I have no idea. I was hoping that maybe someone else has experienced this. Lol...I even have new chickens and their eggs have a dirt taste. Im thinking about switching feeds since it has to be somthing they are injesting. It is kind of frustrating.

Some eggs do and some don't.....are the eggs that do coming from more than one bird? Is this noticeable year round or only a particular times of the year?
Yes, I believe that it comes from multiple birds. From my bantams and regular sized hens, but I dont know which ones. Yes the bantams are the only ones that lay year round right now and the eggs still have the dirt taste. This time of year is very noticeable since all the hens pick back up laying...California's weather is very spring like right now.
