Hi, I'm building an incubator with a mini ss metal roller pins which turns eggs while on their sides. Will this impact on the formation of air sac inside eggs? I read somewhere here that eggs are placed pointy side up!! sob sob I don't want to go back to the drawing board... I aint no welder, That's for sure!! but it looks and works a treat with DC motor & Cogs borrow from an old VCR player

If anyone has a similar set-up I'd be very interested to know. I am waiting on advice from someone here cause I don't want hard boiled smelly eggs

p.s. Also can anyone tell me the maximum moisture level for an incubator for quail??

My incubator roll turns the eggs. I bought it especially for hatching ducks - so having the eggs laying on their sides was one of the most important features I was looking for. I have done a few settings of chicken eggs as well in this incubator- and have had good success with them as well.

The grey frame moves from side to side at timed intervals moving the eggs through a 180 degree turn each time.

eggs in the nest are naturally on their sides.. I think the reason eggs in most turners are pointy end down is to conserve space.
(more eggs in the incubator)..

the common belief for not turnng eggs the same way each time is that there is a danger of the yolk twisting ..

is there a way you can reverse the direction of the conveyer every other time..?

If it were me, I would run a batch of less expensive (free) eggs through and see what happens..

there used to be a round bator on the market that had a heavy wire that dragged on the floor of the bator .. when it went under the egg it would lift it about 1/8 inch and sort of push it along too and that would turn the egg.. I do not know if it reversed or not..

for the last 3 days I put all of my eggs on their sides..

I didn't know they made something like that turner.. a couple of years ago I designed one similar to that ,, only I am not an expert with the electrical part of it , so I never designed a motor and timer.. I designed it for hand turning with a push rod.... I never got around to building it though..

does your incubator have a mfr name ?

Thanks guys I feel more confident already without even a 1st batch in incuabator!

I like your design duckyfromoz very simple but I can't see a shot of how your motor drives the rollers, does it have some limit switches or a timer?

About my design...I can only run my rollers one direction and am waiting on a timer relay switch to time the 12v dc motor... cost me $20 on ebay... The spaces inbetween rollers are spaced for quail eggs, but it should also handle chicken, I'd just adjust the timer to turn more... I trialled water on bottom of incubator and was getting over 90% so I will try a wet sponge as some seem to suggest... I will post some pics of set-up over next few days and will be interested in your comments... Thanks again everyone..
