Eggs Weight Loss

Glad I ran across this thread because I have a question about porous eggs at lockdown also.

By the way, I weigh my eggs too and I love spreadsheets, so that's how I do my calculations. By day 18, 12 of 14 were over 13% loss. 2 were under. A couple were even as high as 16%. One of the lesser weight loss ones, I am concerned about for other reasons, but that's beside the point here. My eggs ranged from 47.8 grams to 59.4 grams to start. I also pay attention to air cells, but since I'm still learning what should be normal, I weigh as a guideline to teach me what the air cells should look like. Hopefully next time, I won't feel like I have to weigh them all.

Anyway, my question... do you guys thing porous eggs should have higher or lower humidity at lockdown, or the same as always?? Mine seem to be a little porous, so I was wondering if the excess humidity at lockdown would affect them differently. The lower humidity in the beginning didn't seem to be too hard on them, or make them lose weight any faster than expected. I use basic "dry" method initially, 30-35%, then up to 65-70% at lockdown.

The porous shells are often very quick to zip and pop, presumably because it's less work for the chick, but I've found that sometimes if the shell yields too easily, they can't tear through the membrane. They use the resistance of the shell. I try to avoid setting very porous shells, but with my turkeys, early season especially, I set every egg I can collect, soiled and porous and everything.
