We live in the Phoenix Area and over the weekend we left town. Our hens were being looked after by my daughter. They laid several eggs between them i n a brand new location and my daughter missed them and left them outside. The temps this weekend reached 108 degrees. Will the eggs be OK or should I dxiscard them?

I am not sure. I collect mine daily from inside of the coop. Maybe it would depend on where the location was at, such as if they were in a place where the sun would be directly on them or not?

lol our girls did this to us once. We had 21 layers and egg production dropped tremendously and we couldnt figure out why. A week went by and I luckily saw an egg by a tree so I started looking around and I pulled over 60 eggs for a few different 'lay' spots. lol. We simply just water tested them and if they stayed on the bottom we ate them.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

They had their protective coat on them. Hens rarely lay in the open sun so they were probably shaded most of the time. I would just scramble them and feed them out to my animals unless it looked funky when cracked. And I always feed the shells back to the hens.

What I don't get about the "water test" is that it is essentially only measuring the size of the air pocket. Unless I am missing something.

I don't wash my eggs. I do refrigerate immediately... In the past I had several dozen accumulated eggs 4-6 months old and they were as good (seemingly) as brand new store bought.

Just use your best judgement and you should be fine.

Good luck!

Can anyone tell me why my road reds eggs start out dark brown shell now are a lighter brown?

Thank you. I have barrel rocks to that lay a light brown egg and now its hard to tell who's eggs are who's lol
